Composition dependence of the local structure and transparency of Gd<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>–B<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> binary glasses prepared via aerodynamic levitation

Gd2O3–B2O3 binary glasses with a wide composition range were fabricated using levitation technique, which allowed the Gd2O3 content of to be increased 60 mol %, is much greater than possible conventional melt-quenching techniques. The dependence thermal, optical, and vibrational properties was investigated. glass transition crystallization temperatures decreased slightly in B-rich region increasing glasses, whereas they Gd-rich region. Both B- found colorless transparent over visible near-infrared radiation. With an increase content, optical absorption edge ultraviolet shifted toward longer wavelength. Additional infrared (IR) transmittance windows observed Raman scattering IR spectra revealed that all B atoms formed isolated BO3 units signals for BO4 disappeared. It concluded characteristic local structure around origin additional transparency. These results show by adjusting resultant borate are expected applied as components use various wavelengths.
